Magazine design and layout for WildTomato January 2011 issue
Our first issue for WildTomato magazine was an exciting one. With a prior relationship with Wildtomato we had always had ideas on how we can improve the look and feel of the magazine's layout. So when we were given control over the design process we had one goal in mind; to design a clean, simple layout that we could build upon over the coming issues.To achieve this (among many other techniques) we removed any unnecessary decorations, created a simple left-aligned 3 column grid structure and maximised the breathing space around the text and images to help readability.
One aspect of the design that we were particularly excited about updating was the cover banner. Once displayed as a white logo reversed out of a red bounding box, we were more than happy to liberate the logo from it's contraining red box and display the logo as part of the cover design as opposed to a seprate element overlapping the design... a very satisfying moment in the Lucid Design camp.
But despite all these changes we did our best to stay true to the magazine's well developed branding and structure, a feat which was accomplished by working closely with magazines editor and inviting his feedback regularly throughout the re-design process.
